BRIEF DESCRIPTION | The rate of urbanization in Rwanda in these last years has been increasing at a high rate and the country envisages accommodating 35% of her population in cities by the year 2020. Thus in order to meet this need for harmonious development and meet the anticipated expansion and growth of Rwandan cities, the Ministry of Infrastructure responsible for Planning and Housing has embarked on the implementation of elaborated urban development plans, master plans and other land use plans to ensure a future orderly growth and development of Rwanda cities and achieve a sustainable economic development of the country.Rwamagana town, situated on the periphery of Kigali City is currently undergoing considerable urbanization pressure which could, if uncontrolled, result in the proliferation of informal settlements. BRIEF DESCRIPTION | Tassia II and III informal settlements located in Nairobi East District have an estimated number of 30,000 residents. The settlements are located adjacent to the city quarry zone and are predominantly characterized by dilapidated housing stock, poor infrastructure and service provision and squalid environmental conditions. For a long time, the residents have associated the settlements with no visible strategy and hope for improvement.In this regard, UREPI was awarded phase I of the contract i.e. implementation of comprehensive upgrading of Tassia II and III informal settlements with the following objectives:
